Following Postgraduate Research, Iain Watson qualified as a Secondary School Teacher and then worked in a number of museums and libraries across the NE. In 2001, he became Senior Curator for Newcastle’s Hancock Museum, becoming Assistant Director of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums in 2004, then Director in 2010 – managing 9 museums, galleries and a regional archive on behalf of five local authorities, the Ministry of Defence and Newcastle University. He is a board member of the Museums Association; a board member of Creative Fuse North East; a member of the Advisory group of ART UK; and an external PhD examiner at Leicester University. He have written and lectured extensively in the UK and internationally on museums and their future. Most recently, he was part of the small team that pitched and won the bid for the Great Exhibition of the North to come to Newcastle Gateshead.
