Understanding the Drivers Behind Cultural Development in the Middle East

Linda Abraham-Silver,Associate Director of Government of Abu Dhabi Technology Department, Abu Dhabi

As countries in the Middle East – in particular the Gulf States – begin to transition their economies from natural resource-based to knowledge-based, the broad education of the local populace has been emphasized on national agendas. Science centers, in particular, have been linked to workforce development goals and to long-term human capital development focused on identified national industry verticals. Museum projects, on the other hand, have been linked largely to tourism goals as defined in national strategic plans. Understanding the impetus for launching these projects, as well appreciating the long-term vision for these ventures in the Arab context, is critical in ensuring that they are successfully developed, delivered and operated. A focused view on the Emirates will lead into a larger view of the development of culture in the Gulf States, as well as the increasing activity in the MENA region.
